A recent study (2014) found that a ketogenic diet reduces the incidence of migraine headaches in women. The study, titled “Migraine improvement during short lasting ketogenesis: a proof‐of‐concept study” was published in the European Journal of Neurology in August of 2014.
A total of 96 women were involved in the six-month study, all of whom suffered from migraines and were already seeing a dietician to help lose weight.
After just one month, those on a ketogenic diet were averaging 0.91 days with a headache per month, compared with 5.11 days before treatment started. Attacks happened less often, and were shorter, too.
Neurologist Links Headache Cure To Ketogenic Diet
Board certified neurologist and migraine headache specialist Dr. Josh Turknett, MD also maintains that a ketogenic diet is the best cure for chronic migraine headaches. In his book The Migraine Miracle: A Sugar-Free, Gluten-Free, Ancestral Diet to Reduce Inflammation and Relieve Your Headaches for Good he details the kind of dietary changes that he implements in his clinical practice with his patients.
In the interview below Dr. Turknett talks about his book and why modern high-carb diets are leading directly to migraines.
