Harlan Mittag, DC

Dr. Mittag started learning about health at Stanford University where he majored in Human Biology. He continued at Northwestern Health Sciences University where he earned his Doctor of Chiropractic degree and became certified to practice acupuncture. For 34 years he treated patients in the western suburbs of Minneapolis, MN using diet and nutrition, nutraceuticals, microcurrent and magnetic therapies (FSM, PEMF), acupuncture, Reiki, Reconnective Healing, and so on. In 2021 he decided to embrace the role of being a “doctor” in a new way. The root meaning of “doctor” (in Latin) is “to teach”. He shifted his focus from treating patients in a clinic setting to providing clients easy to understand, actionable information on the health issues that now plague our society.

I Have 33 Years Of Experience With…

Adrenal (Stress Related) Fatigue

Stress related fatigue (sometimes referred to as adrenal fatigue) is more and more common.  It usually manifests as feelings of fatigue and burnout with a loss of motivation to accomplish things in one’s life.  Fortunately it can be evaluated accurately with lab testing and there are tried and true remedies for it.  Contact me today for more information if you believe you are suffering from adrenal fatigue.  Click on the “Schedule a Call” button at the bottom of this section.

Insomnia and Sleep Issues

Insomnia has become an epidemic in the past couple years.  Most insomnia is due to chronic stress.  Stress hormones, whose job it is to put the brain and nervous system into an alarm state, prevent the brain from quieting down sufficiently at night.  Remedies for stress related insomnia include ways to reduce the impact of stress on the body and non-drug remedies for deep rejuvenating sleep.

Food Sensitivities and GI Issues

Food sensitivities are a greater problem for most people than food allergies.  While food sensitivities have been ignored by modern medicine, they can and do wreck havoc on our health.  Just like food allergies, they represent a reaction of our immune system to what we’re ingesting.  Fortunately, using the right tests sensitive foods can be identified.  When these foods are eliminated from the diet for 3-6 months the immune system usually stops reacting to them.  The problem with these immune system reactions to ingested foods is a cross reaction with the body’s tissues which creates a long list of possible health problems and complaints.

Anxiety

Like stress, anxiety is also on the rise among Americans.  Interestingly, anxiety is often associated with stress and particularly the impact of stress on the brain.  There are also a number of nutrient deficiencies that are known to predispose to anxiety.  Anxiety is often associated with insomnia as well.  Consequently, the natural treatment of anxiety is a broad approach that includes addressing triggers for anxiety but then reducing the brain’s physiological reaction or magnification of these triggers.

Detoxification

It is no longer contested that we are being bombarded by chemical toxins in our food, water and air.  Complaints such as fatigue, weight gain, slow metabolism are often attributable at least in part to toxic overload.  Diseases including cancers and neurodegenerative diseases are strongly linked to environmental toxins.  It is easy to evaluate one’s toxic burden with lab testing.  When toxins are identified one can use a variety of detoxification protocols to safely rid one’s body of the toxins.

Autoimmune Conditions

Autoimmune conditions have risen alarmingly in the last two generations and the rise continues.  Our immune system’s mission is to protect our body from invaders, both foreign and domestic.  With polluted food, air and water we are challenging our immune system beyond what it was designed for.  It is no wonder that our immune system gets confused and begins to react against our own tissues, confusing friend with foe.  Fortunately there are now available effective immune tests that help to identify what we are reacting to.  When we are able to identify what the immune system is reacting to and avoid it (them)–the immune system calms down.  The overall agitated state of the immune system is quelled and the immune system stops mistakenly attacking the body’s own tissues (autoimmunity).

Relief Of Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is one of the most difficult things a person can endure.  Early in my life I personally suffered chronic back and neurological leg pain.  One of the things that motivated me to become a chiropractor was my own suffering of chronic pain.  Then when I trained as a chiropractor I faced a personal challenge to “physicial–heal thyself”.   And I did.  In doing so and in the treatment of many, many patients with pain complaints over the past 33 years, I’ve developed an understanding of the causes and remedies for chronic pain.
